Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert Are Divorcing. Not to Fear, They Have a Prenuptial Agreement. Should You Consider One?
After four years of marriage, country music stars Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert have announced they are divorcing. But from the outside at least, the separation seems to be moving along pretty quickly. From our perspective, this must be at least thanks in part to the couple’s prenuptial agreement. So, yes, if you are contemplating marriage you should at least contemplate a prenuptial agreement.
There are plenty of naysayers on prenuptial agreements (also called premarital agreements), but we’re guessing those who disparage a prenuptial agreement have not had the experience of a messy, protracted [read: expensive] divorce. But there is a huge advantage to having a prenuptial agreement even if you DO wind up staying together, forever: the process of creating the agreement will have you and your fiancée discussing both your current financial state and your future finances at a time when your communication is best. And if you can’t manage this conversation (or set of conversations) while you’re madly in love, you might rethink those vows.
Drafting a prenuptial agreement can be tricky and you don’t want to sign something that is ultimately unenforceable. So if you decide a prenuptial agreement is right for you, be sure to reach out to experienced, competent counsel before you sign on the dotted line.
